Owning a dog in Auckland requires you to register them with the council, much in the same way you register your car. If you do not, and the inspector comes knocking, you could face a fine or have your pet impounded. This is pretty much common knowledge.
What is not common knowledge, however, is that in the Auckland isthmus, Franklin and Waitākere (if your property is less than 600 square metres) you require a permit to own more than one dog. In the Hauraki Gulf islands, Manukau, North Shore, Papakura, urban Rodney and Waitākere (if your property is between 600 and 2000 square metres) you need a licence if you want to keep more than two dogs. In order to get the aforementioned licence you require a Responsible Dog Owner Licence which, in itself, has a slew of requirements you need to meet.
If you do not have the appropriate licence you will be given 14 days in which to correct the problem either by obtaining the appropriate paperwork or reducing your pets to the number allowed in your area.
Going on two years and still enjoying the ride.
